Baby Sumo...
Ok so I’ve been blessed to have another laptop on my desk. The thing is that its only half a laptop. By half a laptop I mean that a laptop only has two main duties at school. One is WORD to type out my blogs and the internet to either post the blogs or just surfing. So by assumption you probably should have assumed that this computer only has WORD. Actually it’s supposed to be a staff PC, but it seems like most of the teachers have their own, and there’s a desktop by the V.P.’s desk.
I just got word today that at this school they have some sort of exchange program where they have 6 college students (I think) from North Carolina participating in this school’s activities. They have the Carolinians going to PE classes and my English classes. Crap, just what I need, another group of foreigners coming in to steal my thunder. Nah nah nah lets not get too big headed. Anyway, my supervisor asked if they could come to my lessons and of course I said, OK. I don’t know what kind of program they are on or if they just decided to come to Japan for a month to see how it is like here. All I know is that I’m gonna have to pull out the stops and do my song and dance. (I have no idea what I just said. Where the hell did that come from?)
Just posted yesterday so not to sure what there is to blog about. OH YEAH!
So yesterday I was able to witness a pretty cool thing. After second period the kids have recess. After recess I was approached by a teacher and asked if I could go to the gym with him. I follow him to what I think is a sumo ring, which it is. Supposedly there is some kind of sumo tournament with a bunch of elementary schools. Kind of like intramural sports. Anyway the winners of each grade level get a free ticket to Tokyo, where they have a popular sumo stable and compete with kids all over Japan. I thought this was pretty cool since coming to Japan, I’ve learned to enjoy sumo. Plus I was told by someone I can’t really remember at the moment but he said that sumo isn’t popular with the young kids. He told me that sumo was an old people watching sport. But to see the young, avid followers, I found it pretty cool. Oh so anyway I was asked to come watch them practice and the kids did pretty well. Of course there was a huge sixth grader that joined the sumo club and of course I was asked to battle with him. Was I surprised? YES! He was pretty big but obviously he can’t possibly want to challenge me right? Well he did. And when he first came at me he charged with his head, (which is what you’re supposed to do) which totally caught me off guard. He bowled into my chest and sent me flying back a few steps. So what do you do? Do you let the 6th grader win to show he had spirit or do you beat him down with the mentality that you’re a student and I’m a teacher? I debated this for a good minute as he struggled to push me out. Well I decided that I can’t possible lose to a 6th grader so I beat him. I didn’t feel too good about it but I can’t have the whole school find out that I lost a sumo match against the biggest kid in school. Am I a bad person? … …. … … NAH!
